Shifting Interior Design Trends

Top 5 Design Trends for 2022

The COVID-19 pandemic has left an indelible mark on us all. It’s changed the way we work, the way we socialize, and how we utilize and enjoy our homes. This shift is, naturally, reshaping residential design trends.

These are the top five notable shifts in interior design trends as observed by the design professionals at Carpet Weaver’s Flooring and Furniture Gallery:

Renewed Passion for Color

Gray and later greige (brownish gray) have been the decorators go-to color foundations for nearly the past decade. Now color is now making its comeback, bumping these neutral staples out of the spotlight.

Paint manufacturers solidified the trend towards color when nearly unanimously agreeing on a very similar tone of warm, sage green as their colors of the year. First, Evergreen Fog by Sherwin-Williams. Later, Benjamin Moore October Mist, Olive Sprig by PPG, Laurel Leaf by Better Homes and Gardens, Glidden’s Guacamole, and Behr Breezeway. Green quickly claimed center stage in home decor.

Soon after Pantone created an all-new color, naming Very Peri its color of the year for 2022.

Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute explains, “As we move into world of unprecedented change, the selection of Pantone 17-3938 Very Peri brings a novel perspective and vision of the trusted and beloved blue color family, encompassing the qualities of the blues, yet at the same time with its violent red undertone, Pantone 17-3938 Very Peri displays a spritely, joyous attitude and dynamic presence that encourages courageous creativity and imaginative expressions.”

Bold and bright, Very Peri seems to have granted permission to move forward into optimism and good cheer.

Watch for these colors to emerge in your local Carpet Weaver’s showrooms by way of carpet, tile, area rugs, home decor, and even furniture fabrics.

Inspired by Nature

Our passion for the great outdoors is inspiring the emergence of color across a multitude of interior design components. Greens, blues, and browns are winning in popularity as dwellers shift in preference to warmer hues inspired by nature.

Pay attention to hard surface flooring where we see a shift from cool pickled whites and weathered grays to warmer browns ranging from mellow bamboo and pine to darker chestnut and even expresso.

Dipping into the warm rust of terra cotta clay, we’re also seeing a return to oranges and pinks, yellows and taupes. Clean, hygienic white is the new neutral.

Gravitation Towards Natural Patterns

The calm and serenity of nature, its vastness, and the security it lends as we aim to escape solitude to stretch our world beyond the walls has inspired a fresh take on pattern in interior design.

Patterned carpets, floral and leaf textured rugs, and rippling color bands like cool waters are just a few of the nature inspired looks pulling at buyers. Marbling and hints of color veining as seen in natural stone is emerging in luxury vinyl and laminate flooring. Wood grain and stand out knots are once again popular in hardwood flooring.

Desire for Lasting Materials

Perhaps the recent reminder of our vulnerability has contributed to the desire for lasting materials. More and more, consumers are making the choice to invest in long-term solutions and high-performance products that ensure lasting durability.

Insatiable Craving for Comfort

Equally important, homeowners are prioritizing comfort when it comes to decorating their homes. Carpet stands alone as the softest, warmest, most cozy and comfortable flooring solution. Innovations in stain protection and durability reinforce the decision to install wall-to-wall comfort throughout the home.
